St. Petersberg Grand Prix

Arriving at the 2025 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg with camera gear in hand, I felt the same excitement I imagine every photographer chases—the opportunity to capture moments that can never be repeated. As someone still building experience in motorsports photography, every event feels like both a challenge and a chance to improve. Standing just feet away from the circuit, watching IndyCars rocket through the streets at nearly 180 miles per hour, is something that instantly puts everything into perspective. The speed is difficult to describe until you experience it firsthand. One second the cars are approaching, and the next they’ve already disappeared into the next corner, leaving only the sound behind. From the opening lap, the race delivered exactly the kind of unpredictability that makes this sport so incredible, with a major incident after Turn 1 forcing several drivers out early and reminding everyone how little room for error exists on a street course like St. Pete.

As the race unfolded, I found myself paying closer attention to the details that often go unnoticed. Beyond trying to capture the perfect action shot, I began to appreciate the emotion and preparation happening everywhere around the track. In pit lane, crews moved with incredible speed and precision, each stop carrying the pressure of potentially changing the entire race. In the garages, teams studied data and adjusted strategy while drivers remained focused on the task ahead. On track, Álex Palou delivered an impressive performance to secure the win, executing a smart and disciplined race that kept him in control when it mattered most. Scott Dixon finished just behind him, once again proving why patience and experience can be just as valuable as outright speed. Josef Newgarden battled his way into third with a steady and calculated approach, while Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top four after a strong early run that showed the pace his team brought to the weekend.

For me, some of the most meaningful photographs came outside of the race itself. The moments between sessions—the concentration on a driver’s face before climbing into the car, a crew member catching a breath after a flawless pit stop, or fans leaning over barriers hoping to get a closer look—often tell the story just as much as the racing does. St. Petersburg offers an incredible setting for that kind of storytelling, with the downtown skyline, waterfront views, and packed grandstands creating an atmosphere unlike any other on the IndyCar schedule. Every corner of the track seemed to offer a different perspective, not just for the race, but for the experience of being there.

As I packed up my gear at the end of the weekend, I realized this race gave me much more than just new images to share. It gave me another step forward in learning how to see the sport through a photographer’s eyes. Every event teaches me something—how to anticipate movement, how to react faster, and how to capture emotion in a split second. The 2025 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg reminded me why I started this journey in the first place. I’m still at the beginning, but every lap, every frame, and every race brings me closer to becoming the photographer I hope to be.
